Perks of the Job!

If you watch my YouTube videos, you'll know that I started working at Whittard in York (Parliament Street) about 5 months ago! It's a lot of fun and I get to meet some rather happy people on a daily basis (well, the days I work anyway)!

I've been going to Whittard's shops ever since I was about 3 years old - I remember when my Mum took me in for the first time, and I tried their instant tea, which was a very unusual concept to me at the time! Since then, I've tried every hot chocolate flavour, every instant tea, and most of the teas and coffees available - turns out it really helps when recommending products to customers! I'm wanting to do some tea, coffee and hot chocolate reviews for my blog/vlog soon, so keep a look out :)

The Whittard I work in is in York city centre, so we get a rather large amount of tourists through the doors. They never cease to amaze us, especially those from foreign countries - just the other day we had a customer who spent nearly £100 on tea and hot chocolate!! Thankfully, most of the products travel well, so they can be taken abroad.

My house-mates get to try a lot of the products too, as I get to take some of them home every now and then. This is the very reason why one of my house-mates is now addicted to Crème Brûlée hot chocolate. :3 (Sorry Hannah!)

By far one of the best parts of my job is meeting people. I love talking to the customers; finding out where they're from, recommending local shops and tourism, and sometimes just being someone to talk to. Obviously it's nice if customers buy things from us after a conversation, but there are a few who just need a natter from time to time.

People often ask me why I'm so happy all the time - I just love being an enthusiastic optimist! Even a smidgen of optimism can go a long way, especially if someone you meet is having a bit of an off day and needs just a little bit of happy.

Like I always say: if you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours. :D

My Biggest Vlog Post Yet...In Progress!

Hello again peeps!

A few weeks ago, me and my family went on our best European holiday yet - we spent 4 days in Paris, France!
We had an absolutely amazing time, and I really wanted to show you all what we did. But instead of putting everything into my blog posts like I did with Destination: Cornwall, I decided to put our journey into vlog posts instead!!

However, this is taking longer than I thought it would to put together!

Unusually for me, I'm also going to create a trailer for these vlog posts before I release the episodes (I think there'll be 2 episodes, although this may extend to 3!), so this is a rather exciting thing for me having not done a trailer before!
Hopefully, these posts will also just give me enough material to create a YouTube channel trailer as well, so keep your eyes peeled!

I'll be posting regular updates from now on:
Twitter: @PinkPurpleDinky
Facebook: Pink, Purple and Dinky - The Official Page

(Mainly Twitter at this rate!)

And if you want to keep checking YouTube every now and then, you can subscribe to me here:

So bear with, peeps; it's getting there! :D

Oh, You Wonderful People!

Hi Peeps!

I've successfully moved into my new home in York! It's a lovely place and much bigger and better than my previous residences! It's a bit further away from work (well, 25 mins walk!) but it's well worth it.

Since there's a lot of bad news about people in the news today (26th July 2014), I just wanted to say some 'thank you's today to lighten the mood :)

First of all, a great big THANK YOU to you peeps for helping the blog reach 7500 pageviews - and counting!! Sorry I haven't had much time to record the podcasts, but I will be working on them once I'm back into the swing of things :) I'm also in the process of planning my next vlog, so keep tuned into Twitter and Facebook for updates!

Secondly, I would like to say a massive thanks to my family, boyfriend, friends and colleagues who have been wonderful during my move, whether you were helping me physically or supporting me from elsewhere! *hugs*

Thirdly, I would like to thank the wonderful dentist who I encountered walking down Aldwark in York the day before I moved house properly. I was walking down the road with a TON of heavy things (I thought it would be a good idea to get at least some of my things to my new house early. Silly me :P) and she stopped, asked if I was okay, and then offered to carry one of my excruciatingly heavy bags!

She carried it all the way to York St John, where she then asked if I would be okay from there. I gave her a hug to say thanks - it was the very least I could do!
I think her name was Dr Julie, but sadly it's been a couple of weeks so I can't remember. If you happen to know someone by that name who helped a girl with her bags three weeks ago (ish) in York, let me know!

Another huge thank you I want to give is to the fantastic lady who was stood behind me in the queue at Morrisons two days ago (24th July). I mentioned to the cashier that I needed two 'bags for life' because my house was 20 minutes away and I had no car (I can't drive yet - but that's a story for a different time). The lady behind me (who happened to be a student) then proceeded to offer me a lift all the way to my road!!

I'd like to note here that I would not usually accept a lift off a stranger (kids - if you're reading this, DON'T DO IT), however I did have a little pray to myself: "Lord, if this is definitely the wrong thing to do, let me know NOW!". Nothing out of the ordinary happened, so I accepted the lift, chatting animatedly to her about university life, horse-riding (something I don't do but my housemate does) and other random topics.
Soon enough we pulled up at the end of my road and she dropped me off, not even asking for petrol money, with me thanking her profusely, and she drove off with a wave!
As I walked down my road, I was actually very thankful I had the lift - the bags were incredibly difficult to carry and I don't think I would have managed the whole way by myself.

Steph, if you happen to be reading this, THANK YOU and I owe you a cake!

So over the past few weeks, I have been helped by a lot of people - those who have been unexpected in their support, and those who have always been there for me :)

Human beings can be so wonderful sometimes :3

Catching Up!

Wow, it's been a while! I've been so busy I haven't written in a month!!! Sorry peeps!

I've finished my 2nd year at Uni properly now! *Aaaaah!* Got some good grades but not sure about some of the other ones. But hey - I passed every single one of them! Yay! I'm still deciding on my dissertation stuff, but I'm getting there slowly :)

I'm going to miss Dan though - he's graduating with either a 2:1 or a 1st! He's just about moved back up to Sunderland now. We've been going out for nearly 10 months, and things are fabulous as usual! <3 *melts* He doesn't live all that far away (about an hour and a bit on the train) so distance shouldn't be a problem. He took me out for a rather large dinner the other night (which was very sweet of him!), and we walked home in the style of penguins. I regret nothing :3

We both happen to sing in a choir called Belfrey Singers - we performed a concert on Friday 27th June, and it was a lot of fun! I recorded most of it too (it cut out at the end of "I Dreamed A Dream" - dammit!), so if you want to see the video I put together for it, click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPRgGJt4bYM

I also kinda did a solo for it too! If you just want to see that (along with the other Les Miserables song I got on video), click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxWomK2TJtk

Ooh! I have some great news as well! I move into my new house soon! Yaaaayyy!!! I get the key on Monday, and I move in totally on the 11th July with the help of my parents. *Note for my family and friends - I will send you my new address in the week to come so you don't send any letters to my old address :D*
I'm very excited to be moving in with two of my coursemates, Hannah and Sarah! We're all bakers, so we discussed regular "British Bake-Off" style competitions... we're in for cakey treats! :3

I have a bit more news for you all too - but as I don't want to write a massive amount here, go check out my video on YouTube which will tell you a bit more about what I've been doing!
You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DQdTfp4tOw

Right then peeps, I'd best be off. Need to be awake for work tomorrow...!

Easter Madness!

*Huff*...*Wheeze*...*Clings to edge of desk and hauls myself up*...

It's been a mad few weeks! Assignments, packing, going home, catching up, more assignment work...
Oh, and it was me and my sister's 21st Birthday on Good Friday! Yay! :D

Which seems weird if I think about it for too long - it doesn't seem 5 minutes since I finished primary school, let alone getting through secondary school and sixth form (intact), working for a year, Gemma getting married and going to Uni for the first time.

Gah. It's going so fast!

It also means that it's been 2 years since I started Pink, Purple and Dinky! 7000 pageviews is not bad going! :)

Wait. I have 7000 pageviews?!? WOW!!!!

I have over 100 twitter followers now too! Rather pleased with that. Just the Facebook page to work on now! :P

Back to birthdays - me and my sister had a fabulous time! We didn't invite as many people this time; we figured having 60-odd people at our 18th was quite a lot, although we would've ended up with around 50 this time if it wasn't the Easter holidays!

We got some pretty awesome presents this year - too many to name, but I got some jewellery from my parents, a cookbook and a Whittard's infusion mug from Gem and Joe, plus a watch and a (surprise!!) bunch of flowers from Dan!
Flowers from Dan!! These were brought to the door by a delivery guy at 10am on my birthday - I was not expecting it at all! (They're all my favourites!)

Lots of cards from friends and family! (Plus flowers. Pink. Happy. :3)

Sister Selfie! Mum and Dad bought me the scarf! :)

My Whittard's tea mug! (With Very Very Berry tea :3)

Me and Gem also made each other's cakes! The one she made me was a TARDIS...
I cried when I saw this. It looked amazing in person! (Before it was eaten, of course!)

My sister with her creation! (Made with some help from Mum as well!) She put pictures of the cake on Reddit too!

Now for the one I made her...
A Smartie cake!!! (With added fudge, jazzies and chocolate toffee on top)

Made by me (with help from Mum when putting the fondant icing on - I'm never good with covering cakes)!

It was filled with Smarties and it was, essentially, a rainbow cake! As my sister would say: "ALL the rainbows!" :D

Needless to say, she was very happy! :3

And they were both unregrettably tasty. :3

Holidays aside, I'm now back in York and (supposed to be) getting my things ready for two presentations next week. Thankfully they're nearly done, just a few more checks to do and they'll be ready to present!

I just need to get my head around the fact that my second year at University is nearly over. Wow.
I finish this academic year at the end of May, but I'll be staying longer thanks to being an RSA. That, and I'll be looking for a job in York too - I'm aiming for my first Summer away from home!
*It's so weird...*

Right then peeps, I'd best be off - I have assignments to attend to...

Timekeeper Memories

So me and my boyfriend Dan were talking about memorable trips we had when we were kids.
I told him about me and my family's experience at the Millennium Dome back in 2000 (14 years ago, I know!) - my Dad worked there for a short while so we got to go twice.

We found a video on YouTube that took the viewer on a virtual tour of the Dome, highlighting various innovative and exciting exhibits, including wonders (if you remember them!) such as Play, Rest, Living Island, and of course, The Millennium Show, amongst other things.

I was particularly disappointed when I noticed that one area in particular hadn't been included in the tour. This was probably my favourite part of the Dome - it was called Timekeepers of the Millennium.

Whilst animatedly telling Dan about me and my family's enjoyment at firing "Time Crystals" (aka foam balls) at each other, I sadly told him that I had no idea what had happened to it when the Dome closed (before becoming the O2 Arena) and that as soon as I knew how to search the internet for it, I have been trying to discover the answer to its whereabouts ever since.

So this evening, while I was doing my work, he decided it would be a good idea to look for it himself, starting with a wiki page of the Millennium Dome.

After finding a picture of the front of the Timekeepers area, he noticed that it was similar to one of the rides at Chessington World of Adventures, a website that had been mentioned on the Dome wiki page as the suggestion to Timekeepers' whereabouts.

I can now reveal that after 14 years of wondering and hoping that it wasn't in a scrapheap somewhere, Timekeepers has been found!

It now takes the form of a play area called Temple of Mayhem in the Wild Asia section of Chessington. Sadly the height restrictions mean that I can no longer play, but it gives me great pleasure knowing that such a great attraction found a really good home to be enjoyed by the masses (of children. Lots of them).

So Chessington, when I come and visit you for the first time, don't be surprised if I'm outside the Temple of Mayhem reminiscing of my amazing time in the Millennium Dome, firing "Time Crystals" at my twin sister and running around like a maniac.

Because I did.
And it was awesome.

Museum Antics!

Hello again peeps!

Sorry I've been away for so long, I've been rather busy as of late! I went to visit my family last weekend, I had a wonderful time catching up with everyone! I took Dan with me as well, who met my Grandad and his wife for the first time! He also met my one of my parents' god-daughters (see the 2012 Destination: Cornwall series - it's the same cute baby who is not so little any more)! Unsurprisingly, she took an almost instantaneous liking to him!

Back to York now - some of you will already know that I am volunteering for the Yorkshire Museum as one of the historic librarians! It's so fascinating working in such an amazing space - books in cases that stretch almost to the ceiling, and considering that the books themselves are probably about 400 years old on average, it's pretty cool being responsible for their care!

Unfortunately we're not usually allowed to take them out of their cabinets for the very reason it's a historic library - some of the books are only bound together by a type of white ribbon - some are in sleeves because they're so fragile.

HOWEVER.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to tell you very much about what's coming up, but let's just say things are about to get a little easier: technology-wise!
On a related note, I'm going to be doing a bit of research for them too! Again, not sure how much I should tell you yet, but I WILL say that I've been down in the museum store.

I'll admit it right now. I geeked out.

"WHAT'S THIS??? WHAT'S THAT??? OOOH, LOOK AT THIS!!! WHAT'S THAT DOING HERE??? WHAT'S THAT?????"

Yup.

I'll let you know all the juicy details when both projects are nearing completion so you peeps can come and see it all! :D

I think that's it for now; I will do my best to write in soon - I have a few essays to start, I'm going to try and get it all done for April (the deadlines are in May, but I'm not leaving it till the last minute this time)!

All righty then peeps, I've gotta go - now, hot chocolate or tea...?

An Exciting Week!

Well peeps, I think it's safe to say that my second semester at Uni is in full swing. SOL tasks (basically homework but with a fancy name), lectures and inevitable planning for essays are all starting to make their mark with 2 weeks already gone.

Plus, we've been informed of our new modules for the third year. Which, quite frankly, is scary considering it seems like only yesterday that I walked into Uni for the first time!

With all of this on my mind, it is perhaps unsurprising that I've started to create a cushion out of knitting, my room is now sparkling clean and I'm writing a new blog post! :D Although I do have an excuse for the room-cleaning - there's inspections and an open day soon, and I want my room to look its best!

I'm starting to get rather excited about something though - if you've been reading my blog posts and viewing my vlog entries then you'll probably have guessed by now!

Yup - Valentine's Day!! :D

This Valentine's Day will be my first in 2 years! Dan's already got something planned, but he's keeping it a surprise. So, naturally, I'm keeping my new outfit a surprise. :3
And no. As much as I want to show you all the outfit, I'd rather like Dan to see it first! (Yes, I've shown my parents and my "makeover artists" - you know who you are ;) - I needed their opinion so that I don't look ridiculous!)

I'll be quite busy this week, so whether you're staying in or going out, part of a pair or not at all, I hope you all have a wonderful day! :D

I have something else to tell you peeps as well! I'm starting up 2 new things for Pink, Purple and Dinky!

The first thing is a page on Facebook dedicated to Pink, Purple and Dinky! My thinking behind this is to make it easier for you peeps to access the links via Facebook instead of having to grab approval from the group. The group members will continue to see my posts first, however I will be posting them on the page too! :D

The second thing is probably the most exciting one for me! When this post goes live, there will be a SoundCloud account for Pink, Purple and Dinky! Because I write the blog posts how I would tell them in person, I thought it would be a good idea to record them in speech for those who may not be able to view my posts very well or want something to listen to as they read along! :D
There may be a few extra bits and bobs on there too, so keep a lookout (or an ear-out!)! :3

The SoundCloud account and the Facebook page will start links to the blog and vlog from this post onwards - if you want to view all my previous posts, well, they're just to the side if you're reading now! :D

I really hope you enjoy reading, listening to and watching Pink, Purple and Dinky as much as I love writing and recording it! :D

Right then peeps, I'd better be off now - I have knitting and baking to do...

Hello 2014!

Blimey, already 12 days in! (Okay, maybe I shouldn't have said that) :P

I've been unsurprisingly busy during the Christmas holidays - shopping for presents (got it all done well before Christmas!), seeing family and friends, opening presents, eating far too much food... the usual, really! Hehe!

I got lots of awesome presents this year, including:
  • A Doctor Who 'disappearing TARDIS' mug
  • Hot chocolate stir-ins
  • Doctor Who boxset (2008)
  • Sparkly things
  • Chocolate
  • An Air Ambulance bear (I named it Captain Teddy North - it even has aviation goggles!)
  • Plus a load of other brilliant things!
I have to say though, two of my favourite presents this year are a pink popcorn maker and a cake mixer, both of which will come in handy if I move into a house next year! :D

I haven't tested the popcorn maker yet, but here's what I made with my wonderful new mixer...

 My own little Dalek Army!

These were really fun to make! I got these for Christmas from my parents! :D

 "EXTERMINATE!"

Of course, we managed to eat- I mean, defeat them! XD

My parents said that they were the best cakes I've ever made! Looks like I'm going to get a lot of practice with my mixer in the future! :3

My last few days of December were spent having fun up in Sunderland with my boyfriend Dan :) I had my first ever trip to Newcastle's Metro Centre - it's HUGE! I reckon I lost a couple of pounds walking around there and it wasn't due to the shopping; I was really tired by the time we finished, and Dan came out with more bags than me!

New Year itself was brilliant: in fact, if you look at my YouTube channel (see below), you should soon find footage of me and Dan undertaking a New Year tradition that I hadn't tried before! It was rather exciting - mind you, I tend to be quite excitable about even the little things :3

Hope you peeps have enjoyed your Christmas and New Year as well! I'm back at Uni now, waiting for my course to start up again. I'm doing RSA duty as well which is why I'm back early.
So besides writing one of my assignments and checking up on my fellow residents, I should be posting again rather soon!

Gonna go now peeps - my assignment awaits...
